Biodegradability standards for carrier bags and plastic films in aquatic environments: a critical review

Many of the protocols published for marine environments do record for relatively complex exposure scenarios, like those involving flow-through conditions, in situ temperatures and/or exposure to field-collected water or sediment ( table 2 ). Certain aspects of these test methods could provide a starting point for new methodological approaches that mimic key physical and chemical conditions encountered within aquatic environments (Polybags). The microbial taxa and abundances used in such biodegradability tests should be similar to those present in the environment of interest, and direct exposures to the inoculum are recommended in addition to strictly controlled experiments involving synthetic media. The inocula should also be used as soon as potential following their assortment, and it is recommended that any material be tested as intended for public use (Polybags; where this is impossible, an attempt should be manufactured to predict the lifetime of the intact product). Improved guidelines are furthermore required for assessing the biodegradability of polymer composites and additive-containing materials, particularly as respirometric data can be poorly correlated with declines in the molecular weight of plastic blends [ 14 , 74 ].

Hasegawa has issued several F-15 kits above the years. The first one was a prototype aircraft with the squared wing tips. It was quite basic with raised panel lines and minimal detail. However, that was expected from a kit in the early 1970s. This kit was later modified with the cut back wing tips, larger speed brake and proper fins with the proper sized anti-flutter weights on the tips. In 1988 a new kit was issued. The first boxing was this one for the home market. It was also released in a USAF version a short time later, and has been reissued a number of times since then. A two seater has also been done with a change in the sprue that has the B/D bits in it. The kit has the expected nicely engraved panel lines, a well done cockpit with engraved instrument panel and console detail, nice detail in the wheel wells, etc, etc. It is also built to the modular view that enables several alternative versions to be done with one kit. Fortunately for us, the Eagle has not been heavily modified until one acquires to the E model, so all the fiddly stuff is kept to a minimum. This kit offers  exhaust that are sans the 'United Kingdom feather' coverings. These were removed from USAF Eagles after it was discovered that they were of small use and caused maintenance problems. This means that you can build this kit as a USAF bird with almost no mods. Actually, a big percentage of the parts count is the afterburner nozzle assembly.  It is equally nice that the USAF fin with the DECM receiver in it is also included in the kit Options are somewhat minimal. One is that you can put decals in position of the instruments should you select. You also have the option of installing three fuel tanks; one on the centerline and the other two hanging from the wing pylons. No included are any offensive missiles. This is to acquire you to fork out additional funds on the weapons set. You can also display the speed brake in the open position, nevertheless this was almost not ever seen open while on the ramp. Finally, the separate canopy and windscreen means that you can pose the canopy open and a canopy brace is provided for that purpose. Instructions are the normal superb Hasegawa offerings with all your colours in Gunze paints and with FS numbers provided where applicable. The rather big decal sheet is festooned with data stencils and offers markings for Eagles with all of the JASDF squadrons flying the plane in 1988. All are painted identically in FS 36320 and 36475, which I believe are light and dark ghost grey, or something like that. It is the rather bland nature of Eagle markings that one does not see also plenty of them built.  Fortunately, there are a few semi-fascinating aftermarket sheets that offer a few slightly more fascinating markings. CONSTRUCTION One thing about this kit is that there are a LOT of subassemblies. As I like to attached as plenty as I can at one time, I got to work proper away. First thing I had to do was repair a broken intake fork on the upper fuselage half. Then I started gluing together bits. This encompassed a drop tank, the wings, the intakes, the cockpit itself along with the nose gear door, the intake ramps and intake walls on the upper and lower fuselage halves respectively, and the seat. Thankfully there are two seats in this set as I broke the side part on one of them so had to use the second one. I then did the normal filler thing to the intakes and then did a batch of painting, mostly of bits that were going to be assembled and difficult to paint once the assemblies were together. Then I glued in the lower intake bits and the compressour faces to the lower fuselage and the intake ramps to the upper part. The two intakes were then simply slid into place. I did not want to come by out when the fuselage halves were mated that I had glued them also far forward or also far back. In the cockpit I attached the decals for the instrument panel and console and after painting the aft part with a blue green from Pollyscale, a few weight was attached to the inner nose part and the cockpit trapped between the nose halves. The area behind the cockpit acquires attached next. This needed super glue as the part itself is a bit wider than the forward nose so each side was glued separately while I held it spread so it would be relatively flush. I then glued together the upper and lower fuselage. Fit is about as expected, which is not big. I glued the intakes on the bottom and outer sides first to be sure I got a superb fit in the areas where they would be most visible. The next step was to glue in the completed nose part. I should mention that I added a touch of weight, only in case. This was the worst fitting part of the build, nevertheless after several sessions with filler and files and sand paper, it looked pretty superb. The wings were not an issue and after attaching the upper and lower sections, and filling the seams, mostly on the outside part, they were glued on. I also cemented the speed brake in the closed position. By this time, I had decided to a USAF F-15C rather than the F-15J, so chose the fins appropriate for this version. The F-15C also has a small antenna on the back of one of the extensions aft of the fin. However, I seem to have lost it or more likely, tossed it out. A part of sprue was shaped and glued in position for a replacement. I fit the inner part into the main canopy part and then masked it and the windscreen. These were then attached, the windscreen permanently and the canopy tacked in position. COLORS & MARKINGS There are few camo options for the Eagle and since I wanted to do a Desert Storm aircraft, I used the scheme most planes wore up to that time, which was FS 36375 and FS 36320. First the wheel wells, wheels, struts, and inside of gear doors were painted white utilising the superb Tru-Colour paints. Then those were masked with tissue and the all airframe painted the lighter FS 36375. I then masked this in the back and painted the bare metal areas with Tru-Colour's Aluminum. The back part around where the burner nozzles would proceed was then misted with Alcla d II Dark Aluminum. The darker FS 36320 was then thinned and the pattern hand sprayed utilising an Iwata Revolution on low pressure.  This was all later gloss coated utilising Pledge (Future). Meanwhile, I assembled a drop tank and the missile pylons and rails. These were painted with the 36375. I also painted a few AIM-9L missiles from the Hasegawa Weapons Set with the Tru-Colour white. The set does not have the 9Ms used in Desert Storm, nevertheless the Ls are pretty close. I did not paint Sparrows as I used the ones from the set on the Spectre done earlier. The next step was to attach the gear struts. These were all a bit fussy to install and one has to take big care to retain things aligned. I particularly found the two auxiliary struts on the main gear to be difficult to attach and the main gear themselves were a very loose fit. Eventually they were in position and solid enough to enable the kit to stand on the struts. With a glossy Eagle, it was time for markings. For this, I used Wolfpak sheet 72-019: Hunter, Hornets and Strikes, which included markings for a F-15C from the 71 TFS/1TFW operating amid Desert Storm. It has a kill marking scored by Steve Tate against a British Mirage F.1 in the early hours of that conflict. The Wolfpak decals went on with small trauma, though I did have a few silvering issues, even when utilising setting solutions. These specific decals are printed by Fantasy Printshop and have big transparent carriers around each marking that I did not trim, and that was where I had a few silvering. I used to trim decals throughout, nevertheless above the years, got spoiled. The rest of the markings came from the kit sheet. I was rather minimalist on the data markings because the ones in the Hasegawa sheet are in British, one of the issues when utilising a J to build a C. I then semi-matte coated the airframe and transport along in the rest of the building. FINAL CONSTRUCTION I then started on the burner cans. Without reading the instructions, I glued the burner petals to each of the exhaust assemblies. I found the fit to be rather poor. I also found out why when I started attaching the small actuating rods, finding them to be also long. These actuating rods had to be attached BEFORE the pe tal assemblies were to be fit to the exhaust assemblies. This would have vastly improved the fit, nevertheless I had screwed up. My options were to continue and make the optimal of it or plunk down leading quids for resin replacements. I did the former. This assembly was painted Jet Exhaust from the Alclad II line. The forward gear doors for the main and nose gear were cemented shut and the wheels were then attached. These are very loose fits so be prepared to use super glue to attach them. The Sparrow clamps were then glued on as were the smaller gear doors. I then glued in the canopy extension strut in the cockpit, removed the masking from the transparent bits and glued the canopy in position after installing the bang seat. Last bits to attach were the pitot tubes close the nose and the wing pylons with missiles. The normal touch up painting was done and the small antennas on the wings and fin as well as the formation lights were painted utilising a Sharpie. Oh yes, there are landing lights on the nose gear to attach. These are nearly impossible to properly clean up once they are removed from the sprue and getting them glued in position was also quite a feat. CONCLUSIONS I realise that the F-15 is not exactly a WOW model for plenty, nevertheless it is a necessary aircraft for the USAF inventory, particularly since the F-22 has had so much trouble in service. It has been decades since I last built a F-15 and that was the Airfix F-15B, which is still a nice kit, nevertheless is a 70s kit with all that implies. Overall it was pretty much what I expected from a 90's Hasegawa kit. Despite my screw-ups, it turned out well and is a fine replacement in my assortment for the old Airfix kit. July 2012

Carriers might be classified into three leading types; the particle-type, the soluble and the cellular carriers. Liposomes, nanoparticles, microspheres, lipid particles, and polymeric micelles are all included in the particle-type carriers. Whereas peptides, modified-plasma proteins, polysaccharides, and biodegradable carriers are classified below soluble carriers. However, viral vectours belong to the cellular carriers. Despite the advantages provided by the cellular carriers depending upon their normal biocompatibility and their possibility to cause an immunological response is still a obstacle [18].

Carrier bags - take your pick

Carrier bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with a bag available to suit any retailer. Here are some of the most popular styles of carrier bags used today:

Vest - The best known carrier bag in the UK and beyond, traditionally used by supermarkets, smaller food stores, general stores and market traders. Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and available in a variety of colours, plain or printed, these bags are lightweight but strong. Handles are attached to each side of the bag make it look like a vest from the front, hence the name. Provided they are not over-filled, these bags are capable of handling regular shopping with ease.

Patch handle - A more glossy and sturdy carrier bag, commonly used by high street stores to impress their customers. Made from thicker polythene than vest carriers to provide extra strength, these rectangular bags have a handle punched out of the top, reinforced by an extra patch of polythene, which gives the bags its name. Available in clear or coloured polythene and the perfect bag on which to print a design or logo to advertise the retailer, hence the popularity with high street retailers.

Varigauge - Similar in appearance to its patch handle cousin, the varigauge carrier bag is rectangular in shape with a handle punched out. However, the clever use of a varied gauge - or thickness - of polythene, which is twice as thick at the top of the bag than it is at the bottom, means that the need to reinforce the handle with a patch is avoided. Available in a variety of colours, these strong bags with extra room thanks to a bottom gusset, are very popular with retailers keen to make a good impression with customers.

Clip close - These strong rectangular bags have an integral white clip attached right across the top of the bag that clip closes shut, giving the bag its name. Made from thick clear polythene with a side gusset, these bags allow retailers to display their products, whilst not compromising on bag strength or quality. The sturdy clip also allows you to hang up the bag - and contents - to really show it off.

Flexiloop - These luxury carriers take their name from the flexiloop handle that is attached - by heat-welding - to the inside of the bag on both sides. Popular with supermarkets who sell them as ‘Bags for life’ - encouraging customers to reuse the bag - flexiloop carriers are made from thicker polythene than regular carriers, which makes them more expensive to produce. Paper versions of the flexiloop carrier bag are popular with boutique shops or fancy high street retailers.

Duffle - A sturdy polythene bag featuring a cord threaded around the top opening and down the sides of the bag. Pull the cord to close the bag tight and loosen to open. Useful for carrying bulky or weighty items and handy to carry, so often used by sportspeople as a kit bag. Also popular with sports shoe retailers.

Drawstring - Less sturdy than the duffle bag, so not suitable for similarly bulky contents, but operate on a similar principle. Drawstring bags feature two strings looped around the opening of the bag, with the ends of the drawstring appearing through separate openings adjacent to each other. When pulled at the same time, the strings tighten together and the bag closes. Typically made from clear polythene, these bags are a popular way of displaying products in a shop.

Grip Seal - A cross between a carrier bag and a grip seal bag, these bags contain an integral grip seal that runs across the width of the bag just below the cut-out handle. Simply squeeze the grip seal between forefinger and thumb to seal the bag shut, providing protection from rain or other external contaminants, then gently pull apart to open and repeat as many times as you wish. With a clear polythene front, a handle for hanging and a glossy finish, these bags are a great way to display your products.

Show off your business with printed carriers

Printed carrier bags are an ideal way for businesses to advertise directly into their local community. Take a plain patch handle carrier and turn it from the smart, sturdy carrier bag it normally is into a walking advert for your business.

Businesses have to provide carrier bags to their customers anyway, so why not pay a little more for them and get something back from the carrier bags once they have left your shop.

By adding your company logo or design to one or both sides of your carrier bags, you not only make your business look more professional and more eye-catching, but you let your customers act as mobile advertisers, when they leave your store and walk around others in the area with your company branding there for all to see.

You can even add a slogan or advertising message to tell your potential customers exactly what they need to know about your store. All this, carried straight out into the heart of your target market and the hundreds or thousands of other potential customers out there.

Not only do printed carriers help attract new customers, but they also reinforce the message to existing customers that you are a professional, reliable and smart retailer. So next time they go to their cupboard or car boot and see your carrier bag, they see your bag, that initial good impression is reinforced and they move that step closer to being a return customer.

So why bother with plain carrier bags? Go one step further and design your own printed carriers, complete with your company branding, to take your business to the next level.

Bacterial infections in surgery can be devastating and are often associated with great morbidity and poor versatile outcomes [ 30 ]. The management of postoperative infection requires surgical debridement, the removal of all necrotic tissue and implants, and the administration of systemic antibiotics. Nevertheless, antibiotic treatment may be inadequate or ineffective in patients with poorly vascularised infected tissues [ 31 ]. Delivering local antibiotics by utilising antibiotic-impregnated biodegradable carriers has been proposed to provide a sustained release of antibiotics to infected areas, replacing intravenous antibiotics infusion. The possibility of PLGA copolymer being a biodegradable antibiotic carrier has been studied for years. In most previous studies, the antibiotic was microencapsulated in a PLGA bead with a high molecular weight (molecular weight 3.2610 4 Da), a high percentage of the poly(lactic acid) ratio (70:30), a high antibiotic loading dosage (50%), and a high formation temperature (110C) [ 32 35 ]. The present study used a hot-compress molded method with a low molecular weight (molecular weight 5000Da vs. 3.2610 4 Da), a low ratio of poly(lactic acid) ratio copolymer (50:50 vs. 70:30), a low antibiotic loading dosage (16.6 vs. 50%), and a low formation temperature (55 vs. 110C) to form a biodegradable antibiotic bead delivery system. In this study, the authours achieved 36days of a sustained release of antibiotic from this antibiotic delivery system in vitro (Figs. 2 and 3 ) which is adequate for treatment of posttraumatic osteomyelitis (36weeks) [ 3 , 32 ].

Single-use carriers? No such thing!

The carrier bag is often portrayed in the media as the single biggest cause of pollution and litter on the planet.

Most commonly, the high density polythene (HDPE) carrier bag used by supermarkets is singled out as the biggest culprit. These bags, which are subject to a government levy in many countries - meaning customer have to pay a few pence or cents for each bag they use - are often referred to as “single-use carriers”, which is a term that is not only misleading but also irresponsible.

Carrier bags should be reused as often as possible and by calling them “single-use carriers” - including in newspaper articles widely criticising the use of such bags - the implication is there that the bags should be thrown away.

This is giving entirely the wrong message to customers and does not represent the facts. 82% of UK households reuse over half of all carrier bags they use, with 59% reusing all of them (Waste Resources Action Programme report, 2005).

There are so many things you can do with a carrier bag once you’ve used it to carry your shopping home. The most obvious is to take it back to the shop and use it again for its original purpose - to carry shopping! But you can also use carrier bags for wrapping your packed lunch, or as a portable laundry bag when you go on holiday, or wrapping shoes in a suitcase to keep your clothes clean. There are loads of things you can use it for if you put your mind to it, so use your carriers again and again.

Even when your carrier has seen better days and you’re ready to throw it out, you can give it one final hurrah and use it as a rubbish bag before throwing it in the bin. There’s no such thing as a single use carrier bag - at least there shouldn’t be!
